The PLC has voted to have each Scout purchase 5 stakes to be used to set up their tents.  In addition, the PLC decided that all Scouts would buy the same stake from the troop to be uniform.  Between 2 Scouts there will be 10 stakes to set up the tent.  This will prevent further damage to the "loops" and since each Scout owns their own there will be less chance of losing one and having it get caught in mowing equipment and injuring someone.  The new tent stakes have arrived and are available for purchase.  They are orange for high visibility and are quite robust.  Cost is $1 each - 5 for $5.  We will begin selling them to individuals starting Monday.  Adults may also buy stakes for the same price.  As an added incentive to keep the stakes in good shape, when a Scout leaves the troop he may re-sell the stakes back to the troop for half price if they are in good condition.

17-year-old Eagle Scout Sam Berns was diagnosed with progeria, a rare and rapid aging disease, at the age of two. In this special talk recorded shortly before his death on Jan 10, 2014, Sam explains his philosophy on how to live a happy and fulfilling life.

If you have about 10 minutes to be inspired (and perhaps more appreciative of your own life), watch this video.  A Scout is Brave and A Scout is Cheerful.

On Dec 5, the troop worked our monthly service project at PADS.  We spent about an hour in the basement of the United Protestant Church in Grayslake to help them prepare for those who would be sleeping overnight in their shelter.  Some 43 people were expected to take refuge at the shelter that night.  Click Read More for two photos of the crew that helped out.  Thank you.

A whopping 17 Scouts attended Troop Leadership Training held on Sunday, November 3.  Your troop leaders spent the first evening in Standard Time working on a variety of topics to make the troop stronger.  Through lecture and exercise, the Scouts reviewed the Stages of Group Dynamics, the basics of good planning, the application of the EDGE Method of training and just a hint of Leave No Trace principles.  Although the weather was getting cold as the sun set, we did well in our outdoor classroom out by the gear shed.  Thanks to all who participated and giving your time to improve the troop.  See who was there... ethanOur new, newest Eagle Scout and the troop's second in October was approved on Oct 23.  The North Star District Eagle Scout Board of Review was convened to review Ethan De Keyser and to assess his documentation and credentials.  After a thorough evaluation, Ethan was approved by the Board as an Eagle Scout.  Ethan's service project primarily involved the building of a patio and garden bench that remembers key figures and contributors to the Grayslake Historical Society.  Please leave a comment for Ethan and congratulate him on his accomplishment (log in and click on the headline to leave a comment).
